You may ask what is ‘educational toys’? Are there non-educational toys? Educational toys are also known as “Instructive Toys” where objects of play are expected to stimulate learning for children, generally1. However, there are not-so educational toys that are war-based and introduce aggressive play scenes e.g. Squid Game.

Though most toys are neutral and educational in nature, most boys will incline to more competitive or somewhat ‘dangerous’ kind of toys e.g. vehicle and gun toys. Girls, on another hand will incline towards those toys which are related to physical attractiveness, nurturing and domestic skills e.g. doll houses or beads2. Moreover, usually parents and teachers will tilt the children’s inclination to follow gender stereotype3.

Coming back to what is ‘play’? According to UNICEF online article4, playing is an action involving fun and learning in which a child willingly participates. Playing has a very important role in children’s lives. It contributes to the development of cognitive, motor, psychosocial, emotional and linguistic skills. It also plays a key role in raising more self-confident, creative and happier children. In short, the profession of the child is the game he or she plays5.

Children have always had an idea where to play. Some have found it in an empty lot and others in a junk yard6. Having said that, due to the Covid pandemic and the change of time, most children will play at the comfort of their home, school, kindergarten and day care centers.

Now let’s look at what is ‘learning’? Learning is a process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience and increases the potential for improved performance and future learning7. For children, playmates are the main factor of learning during the process of play. The playmates are their parents, siblings, classmates or friends8.

Given many dual income parents nowadays, it is very crucial to spend time with your junior who will later be the future of our country. According to studies done by the same source, when a parent spends 15 minutes to play with his or her child, a high-intensity attachment relationship can be developed. If a parent play with his or her child with clay or painting for 15 to 45 minutes, not only a parent-child attachment relationship can be developed but also the child’s more detailed motions will be trained and improved.
